PERSPECTIVES AND RESOURCES

Communication, Circles, & Coaching

Restorative Practices are described by Costello et al. (2009) as a proactive way to build school communities that have fewer discipline issues. We decided to have you look through the lens of the 3 Cs: communication, circles, and coaching.

COMMUNICATION

Restorative communication moves us away from the punitive conversation, "talking at," to the collaborative conversation, 'talking with." Restorative communication can be used formally or informally and creates an environment of education when challenging behaviors are exhibited.

CIRCLES

Implementing the use of circles in your classroom promotes relationship building and provides an immediate way to address pro-active or reactive behaviors.

COACHING

We define coaching, as it relates to Restorative Practices, as the practice of rebuilding rapport and educating the person behind the misbehavior through the use of research-based practice.

As you progress through this page, you will come upon three videos that highlight each of the 3 Cs. Each video is approximately 25 minutes in length. The total amount of time for completion of the perspectives and resources page is two hours. Before viewing the videos, review the questions, and get ready to pause the videos to answer the questions.

SUGGESTION: Again, feel free to take breaks as needed. All videos and content selected by the course designers are relevant and support the goals and objectives of the module.
