DO YOU HEAR ME?
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M SAYING?

Maynard and Weinstein (2019) believed that it takes long-term effort to effectively implement Restorative Practices. Communication is tough enough for adults, and teaching students to communicate effectively is tougher. They need to be taught how to communicate with adults in order to communicate as an adult later in life. They also need to be heard and understood in order to solve underlying problems and prevent future negative behaviors.

DO YOU FEEL ME?
DO YOU CARE?

Teachers should strive to teach their students empathy (Maynard & Weinstein, 2019). Teaching them what empathy is and how to empathize with others is an important step in students' growth and understanding. Empathy, as defined by Maynard and Weinstein (2019), is understanding how our actions may have affected others while attempting to repair the harm. Teachers should never shame students. Building trust and positive relationships, all while showing empathy, models effective communication with teachers and other students - the ultimate goal being that our students grow into respectful, responsible adults.

MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF YOUR LEARNING

Restorative Practices are intended to build and repair relationships. As students grow and develop social skills, they need support in character development (Maynard & Weinstein, 2019). As with adults who are beginning a new career, we should not assume immaturity or irresponsibility are to blame for problem behaviors (Maynard and Weinstein, 2019). A more effective approach is to offer struggling students appropriate support and coaching. Teachers trained in Restorative Practices should be change leaders - the change being in how negative behaviors are addressed to prevent reoccurrence.

CHALLENGE SCENARIO REVISITED

As you are walking to the cafeteria, you hear students yelling, "Fight!" When you walk in, you find students #1 and #2 engaged in a physical dispute, while students #3 and #4 are trying to diffuse the situation. As you approach all four students...

  1. What should your first reaction be?

  2. Revisit your answer to the same question from the Initial Thoughts page.

How is your answer more informed?

During your next steps, you find out that while students #3 and #4 were trying to diffuse the situation, students #1 and #2 continued verbally antagonizing one another until they became physically aggressive. You know that all of these students are friends and did not mean for it to go this far.

3. How could you apply Restorative Practices to this situation knowing what you now know?

4. Should the students who were attempting to diffuse the situation receive praise? Why/Why not?

5. How do we prevent this situation from happening again?

BUILD A WORD CLOUD

Summarize your understanding of Restorative Practices by building a Word Cloud using key terms/concepts. Include [at least] 20 different words. A few words you may want to include, for example, are community and healing. To begin, visit https://www.wordclouds.com/, and select 'FILE' in the horizontal white menu at the top left of the page. Then, select 'New Word Cloud.' Next, select 'WORD LIST', and begin typing your list and assigning a weight/color/font to each word. You will find other useful tabs in the white menu as well. Should you have questions, locate the FAQ link at the top of the Word Cloud website.

Do not forget to make a copy of your creation to attach to the MODULE WORKSHEET for documentation.
